Dr. Steven R. Shum, O.D.

Dr. Steven R. Shum, O.D.

Dr. Shum, received his undergraduate training from the University of Tennessee, his Masters degree in education from the University of Memphis, and his doctorate in optometry from the Southern College of Optometry. Dr. Shum is certified by the Orthokeratology Society of America and is also certified to practice Therapeutic Optometry. He was on the faculty of the Southern College of Optometry from 1973 to 1986, and has been an adjunct professor there since 1989.

Dr. Shum has been in private practice in Germantown since 1975, and is licensed in Tennessee. He is DEA registered and a member of the American Optometric Association, the Tennessee Optometric Association, and the West Tennessee State Optometric Association. He is an investigator for RGP, soft bifocal contact lenses, and contact lenses used in orthokeratology.

Dr. Shum is also a refractive laser surgery consultant, and a computer vision syndrome specialist using the PRIO procedure. He participates in the InfantSEE Program, which is a comprehensive infant eye health evaluation and vision assessment within the first year of age, free of charge. He has a special emphasis in the care and treatment of Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome. Furthermore, Dr. Shum performs pre and post operative cataract care. Dr. Shum also sees patients with eye infections or injuries.

Additionally, Dr. Shum is active in his community. He is a member of the Germantown Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer at the Church Health Center, Habitat for Humanity, and a participant in the Vision USA program.

Dr. Karey Conway, O.D.

A native of Germantown, Dr. Conway received her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received her Doctorate of Optometry from The Southern College of Optometry in 2005 and was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa, which recognized her superior academic achievement.

Dr. Conway has been with our practice in many capacities since 2000. She is licensed in the State of Tennessee and is DEA registered. Dr. Conway is a member of the American Optometric Association. She is certified to practice Therapeutic Optometry. She participates in the InfantSEE Program, which is a comprehensive infant eye health evaluation and vision assessment within the first year of age, free of charge. Furthermore, Dr. Conway performs pre and post operative cataract care. She also sees patients with eye infections or injuries. Dr. Conway emphasizes in the comprehensive eye care of infants and children. She specializes in developmental testing for learning disabilities and vision therapy to assist in learning related vision disorders. Dr. Conway is also a refractive laser surgery consultant and has a special emphasis in the care and treatment of Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome.

Brister has been responsible for all business aspects of the practice since 1994. After receiving her Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1990, she joined the practice to assist her husband, Steve, with the growing demands of a small business.

Office Receptionist

Janice joined our practice in 2006. She has 20 years experience as an office assistant, nine years of which have been in the medical offices. She is the key liaison between the patients and staff members.

Insurance Specialist

Jeanette joined our practice in 2004. Prior to joining our team, Jeanette gained experience in the optical lab setting, and most recently working in Optometry offices. Jeanette handles most Health and Vision Insurance inquiries, as well as handling patient relations.

Contact Lens Specialist

Keana joined our practice in 1996. She began her Optical career in 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. Keana is certified by The American Board of Opticians and The National Contact Lens Examiners. Keana has a high level of expertise in fitting contact lenses on all types of patients, such as those needing soft lenses, hard lenses or having unique conditions like keratoconus or post surgical procedures. She also specializes in bifocal contact lenses and contact lens therapy including corneal refractive therapy (CRT), that reduces nearsightedness.

Frame Design Specialist

Dawn joined our practice in 1997 from Minneapolis. She received her Associate Degree in Fashion Marketing from Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. She is our frame stylist and frame buyer. Dawn has over 15 years experience in the field of Opticianary and uses that expertise to completely customize each patient’s frame to their specific needs. Dawn has a keen ability to showcase each patient in a frame that fits his or her unique style!

Dixie Armstrong, LDO, ABO, NCLE

Lens Specialist

Dixie joined our practice in 2007. She began her career in the field of Opticianary in 1988, working as an Apprentice Optician while enrolled at Seattle Central Community College in the Optician’s program. Dixie is a state Licensed Optician in Washington State (1993) and in Tennessee (2005) as well as nationally certified by The American Board of Opticians and The National Contact Lens Examiners. Dixie has expertise in all facets of Opticianary, however she is particularly skilled in lens selection tailored for each patient’s specific visual needs.

Keren M. Miller, NCLE

Optometric Technician

A native of Germantown, Keren joined our practice in February of 2009. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in 2005 she worked for a Pediatric Ophthalmologist as a Technician. The National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certified Keren as a Contact Lens Technician. Keren also assists Dr. Karey Conway in Vision Therapy and has experience with children, in particular special needs patients.

Annie Dickerson

Receptionist

Originally from Columbia, TN, Annie joined our practice in August of 2009. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of TN, Knoxville in 2004. Shortly after earning her Bachelor’s degree she worked as the executive assistant for a busy Optometry office in her hometown. Annie is well acquainted in all facets of Optometry. She is currently taking courses towards her Master’s degree and is set to graduate in 2011 from the University of Memphis.
